Any relocating lizards from one place to another is definitely stressful. By taking advantage of our advice, you can partially minimize it.

Here are a few important rules:

• Do not feed! Do not feed your pet before the trip.
• Use a container. Never transport a lizard in a terrarium or in your hands. Reptiles should be transported in containers – special fauna boxes.

The container should be:

• the right size for the lizard – not too big, even slightly snug, so that the animal does not have the opportunity to move around actively and get shaken during transportation. This is necessary for the comfort and safety of the pet;
• equipped with ventilation holes;
• securely and conveniently closed with a lid.

The container should be without substrate! The ideal option would be to lay soft paper towels on the bottom.

Do not put any water bowls, hides, or favorite decorations inside! They can tip over and even injure your pet. Do not put food in the container, either. The lizard will not eat during transportation.

Shipping lizards in the cold season requires special attention. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals; they cannot generate their heat. Unlike us warm-blooded creatures, who only need to bundle up in warm clothes, reptiles need a heat source.

Even if you are traveling by car where it is warm, the pet needs to be carried from the house to the car and from the car to the house without freezing.

So, how can you go about transporting lizards?

There are a couple of ways:

First, use the warmth of the human body. Yes, after all, human body temperature is around 97.7°F (36.5°C). And we are a great option as a warmer for reptiles. The container is held under the armpit, placed over the undergarment or in inside pockets. However, you cannot transport several reptiles or very large individuals this way. After all, it’s not easy to put, for example, a large monitor lizard under your armpit.

The second way is to use a thermal bag. A heat source is placed in the bag (a simple bottle of warm water can serve as one). This heat source should be warm but not hot. The goal is to transport the animal, not to cook it. You can travel this way until the heat source starts to cool down significantly, but this is usually enough to get from point A to point B.
