Chameleons can be great pets. They don’t require a lot of care. If they have the right environment and proper attention, they will be happy. However, there are precautions that must be taken to ensure their safety. It’s important to know how to safely transport a reptile, and preparation for the move is necessary.

Preparing for a Chameleon Relocation

Proper and safe packing, as well as transportation of your reptile pet, doesn’t just start on moving day. There are several steps you should take leading up to that day:

• Purchase or make a suitable container for your pet. Whether you choose a pre-made or custom-made container will depend on the size and type of your reptile, as well as the method of transportation.
• Once you have a container, it’s time to acclimate your chameleon to the carrier or box. Don’t disrupt their entire routine, as this can cause them stress even before moving day arrives. However, you should place your reptile in the transport container for an hour or two each day for a week or more before the move. This gives them time to get used to the new environment and can reduce their stress levels when it’s time to move.
• Before you transport your chameleon, it’s also a good idea to make sure your pet is in good health. Be sure to visit a veterinarian within 10 days of your trip. They can examine your reptile and provide a health certificate for your pet.

How to Transport a Chameleon by Car

Once your chameleon is securely and properly packed in its container, it’s time to load it into the car. Follow these steps to make moving day as calm as possible.

• Again, make sure you have a carrier of the appropriate size for your reptile. The carrier should be large enough for the reptile to move around, but not so large that it can slide around. Always plan to secure it in place with a seatbelt or other items in the car that will prevent movement during transport.
• Be sure to keep your chameleon out of direct sunlight.
• Minimize stops, and never leave your chameleon unattended in the car. If you need to leave the car briefly, make sure all the windows are closed.
• It can get too hot or too cold in the car, so make sure you monitor the temperature inside the carrier. If you’re traveling from a hot climate to a cold one, a heat pack wrapped in a towel will keep your reptile cozy. Or, if it’s the other way around, a cold pack in the reptile carrier will keep your pet cool. In either case, the surface of the container should not directly touch your pet’s skin.
• Check on your pet every time you stop to make sure they are comfortable and secure. Since they may hide in the folds of a towel, do not open the carrier – they could escape.

Once You Arrive

You’ve arrived and successfully and safely transported your chameleon. What now?

It’s time to start acclimating your pet to its new home. Make sure you have their enclosure all set up before you take them out of the container. Also, remember that moving day is stressful for your pet. Handle them more gently than usual, as their behavior may be different. Get your pet back to their normal routine as soon as possible. This will ease their transition into their new home.
